From the Desk of Caspar
"You only hear what you understand”
I was reminded of this fact at an event this week where the speakers were being translated into 7 different languages.
A great reminder that the art of communication is not about what is transmitted, but what is received.
How often in the teams we work with, whether at work or at home do we fall into the trap that sounds something like…
“I’ve said X”…so therefore "you must have heard X”
And the reality is they heard Y instead.
Miscommunication sits at the heart of so many differences and conflict.
Remember we only hear what we understand.
Tip: It’s always worth checking in to see what message has been received by the other person. It will save you time, energy and relationships.
It’s been 3 Years
3 years ago today I did my first speaking gig.
It was at that event, that I realised the power of sharing stories and a toolkit to make a difference to other people.
It was at this event that I realised that our stories are never about us. They are simply a way of sharing a set of ideas.
It was at this event I realised that storytelling and sharing a set of simple yet powerful tools was the most meaningful thing I've done in my working life.
It was then that I made the decision that sharing stories (both ours and others) and these tools to enable one to thrive both at work and at home was what I wanted to do for the next 25 years.
3 years in and absolutely loving what I do.
The stories of how other people who've been to my talks and workshops or read the book, and are using these tools and ideas is without question the most rewarding part of it.
The most exciting part is that I'm just getting started.
Bring on the next 3 years.
Hacking Learning
Did you know that turning on the subtitles will improve your child's literacy?
Simple? Yes
Impactful? Yes.
My friends Oli Barrett and Henry Warren are leading this global mission to encourage broadcasters, policymakers and parents to Turn on the Subtitles.
Perhaps the world's biggest literacy campaign?
In the Spotlight
Great to talk to Ian Farrar on the Industry Angel podcast talking about the reason why you should do something and the reasons you should NOT do something.
Also lovely to be featured in this video from the Members Only 2 day event by Simon Lewis and with some brilliant speaker friends.
Coming Soon
Construction work is well under way for my new recording studio. Watch this space for things to come…
