We were all in the same boat

From the desk of Caspar:

As many of us get used to the idea of being self isolated, we're facing a different set of challenges around working whilst at home.

Although, clearly under very different circumstances, we have some experience having effectively self isolated on a small boat whilst continuing to work and also have our kids with us over a two year period.

Here’s 3 things we learnt around how to work better as a team:

  • Create time to talk.  Switch off your phone/ laptop, have a cup of tea &  just talk to someone. Ideally someone you’re at home with, but it could be a phone call with someone else. For us, a min of 30 mins a day. Just doing this has kept things fresh/ healthy in our conversations.

  • Clear your mind. In a world with continuous news flow/ social media, it’s important to switch off/ let your mind settle. At sea, we had no wifi so no social media or news feeds. It was refreshing.

  • To do important work , consider getting up early to do it when everyone else sleeps. I wrote my first book by getting up at 3am for a month and writing 2,000 words a day. It gave me good concentration time.  To catch up on sleep, I’d either nap in the afternoon or go to bed earlier. In this current situation, I’m managing my work by us all agreeing a set of work/school work timings and we meet up for breaks/ meals together.

Tip: Adapting is key. Consider relaxing fixed rules in your mind about how things are meant to be and get creative in how you plan your time for you, your work team and home team.

Online Talks

I’m doing a lot of online presentations at the moment on these topics. Get in touch if these would be helpful for your business or team. This is the type of reaction these are getting from teams who are in growth mode, batten down the hatches as well as those just trying to hold it steady.

More details of inspirational and practical online teambuilding talks and workshops are here.

We had the pleasure of hosting Casper as our key note speaker during our global supply chain transformation kick off, adding the perfect spice to our program - ”making the impossible possible”.

Thanks Casper for a great hour and for motivating and energizing our team!
