From the desk of Caspar:
What’s your teams identity?
I see lots of ambitious companies shaping the identity of their team using the construct of "we are ..." and {insert relevant company name like #weareCisco}
It's a powerful way of creating identity, community and a sense of togetherness.
Here's my question.
Do you, or would you use this approach either with your home team or your work team?
The culture or identity of a team will happen anyway.
Isn't it better to positively shape it or influence it?
And that stronger identity, a stronger sense of togetherness can only serve to help us to be more able to achieve our big bold goals.
Do you agree or disagree?
PS the pic is one we had some fun creating as a family identity a few years ago based on the ideas in Carol Dwecks incredible book, Growth Mindset.
Generosity
I got inspired reading a combination of Richard Dawkins and Seth Godin this week. Both advocate a focus on being more generous. Generous in terms of how we show up in the world and what we give.
Dawkins captured it beautifully with this quote:
“Let us try to teach generosity and altruism, because we are born selfish”
It’s a great insight and a great call to action. And of course its something that sits at the heart of what I think of as being more human - by putting people first.
Tip: in what ways could you be more generous this week? I personally love the concept of conversation generosity and being much more interested in the person speaking than what you have to say.
Big Bold Bites
In the spirit of generosity , rather than share one of my videos this week, I thought I’d share a video where a good mate of mine, Jamil Qureshi drops some brilliant insights in conversation with Steven Bartlett. It’s a great interview and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Thought for the day
Your daily habits as a team are what will move you from where you are to making the pole star story happen.
Celebrate successes by regularly noticing what is changing over time. Remember that it is the accumulation of marginal gains that count and that you might not see immediate impact.
However, over time these habits will change the game and they will be what turns your story from a picture on the wall into a set of experiences, memories and photographs that will define your team together.
