From the desk of Caspar:
Begin at Home
I can’t think of anything that can bring either greater joy or greater misery than our intimate relationships.
Most of us have experienced the range of emotions ranging from joy and laughter to the darkest of days. Some of you may be in one of those extremes right now - others may have found a comfortable ground in the middle. Some may have painful experiences behind them. Others may have painful experiences ahead of them.
Our personal relationships are one of the most taboo conversations in work life.
Why is that?
Perhaps it’s because it’s not culturally acceptable.
Perhaps it’s because we don’t feel safe sharing these things at work.
Perhaps it’s because we seldom talk about this at all.
I’m not advocating we all start baring our intimate details at work.
What I do advocate though is this:
To make it ok to say I’m having a tough time at home.
To create psychological safety at work where people do feel safe to talk to colleagues.
AND
To teach people the skills on how to better navigate personal relationships.
There are two huge upsides at work from this:
It’s the same skills that make you better at home that make you better at work. They are quite simply human skills.
To use the oft used phrase “happy wife, happy life” and the gender equivalents thereof, if you’re happy at home, you’ll almost certainly perform better at work. The reverse is also obviously true too!
I watched Steven Bartlett interview Sir David Brailsford this week. Sir David candidly admitted he had been unsuccessful in his romantic relationships. It is perhaps one of downsides of focusing on our mission/ work at all costs.
All of our situations are different but I can’t help but feel that the more we provide our teams the skills to navigate not just work but home life as well, the more we will all thrive in all areas of our lives. Lets’ end the taboo.
