No one ever decided because of a number. They need a story.”

Facing the Storm
At sea when you’re facing a storm, you have 2 options.
Run before the wind and try to get away from the storm.
Or turn and face it.
It’s the same at work.
Each of us faces a choice.
Option 1- We can do what we’ve always done.
OR, Option 2, we can choose to look ahead and try to figure out what moves to make to prepare for the future. Option 2 is Facing the Storm, the storm that you can’t outrun.
Pro’s and Cons.
Option 1 probably feels safer, less mentally taxing and a known quantity. Unfortunately though, it’s riddled with risk as we face an insane pace of change, uncertainty, and disruption.
It probably doesn’t feel like a great option as high levels of stress, burnout, and a sense of being overwhelmed are commonplace.
The hard reality is that Option 2 is the only real option we have.
We have to take the time to re-think where we want to be and how we adapt to the change we face.
If we don’t quite simply, we will be left behind.
Doing nothing is not a viable option.
It’s very easy to lose sight of the bigger picture.
We get caught up in the day-to-day grind, reacting to problems as they arise, putting out fires, and often forgetting to take a step back and consider where we’re heading.
We’re so focused on surviving that we forget to face the storm. And this is where the most powerful tool you can have, your story comes in.
The Power of Your Story: Deliberate, Specific, and Conscious Control
The first thing you need to understand is this:
Your story is the most powerful tool you have.
Whether you’re steering a company, guiding a team, or simply navigating life’s ups and downs, your story is your compass.
It’s the narrative that defines how you see yourself, how others see you, and ultimately, the impact you have on the world.
But here’s the kicker—most people are not in control of their stories.
They let life happen to them, reacting to circumstances as they arise, rather than shaping their own path.
This passive approach leads to a disjointed narrative, one that’s often inconsistent and lacks clarity.
In contrast, those who take deliberate, specific, and conscious control of their story craft a narrative that not only propels them forward but also inspires others to follow.
The Hidden Power of a Story
To fully grasp the importance of your story, you need to understand just how powerful it is.
Your story isn’t just a historic passive recounting of events—it’s an active force that influences your thoughts, behaviors, and outcomes.
Consider the most successful leaders, entrepreneurs, and change-makers.
What sets them apart isn’t just their skills, their strategies, or even their resources—it’s their mastery of their own story.
They don’t leave their story to chance.
They craft it with intention, infusing it with their values, their vision, and their purpose.
Oprah Winfrey. Her story of overcoming poverty and adversity isn’t just a tale of personal triumph—it’s a source of inspiration for many.
By taking control of her narrative, she’s not only shaped her own destiny but also inspired countless others to do the same.
In business, your story is your brand. It’s what differentiates you from the competition, what resonates with your customers, and what drives your success.
Companies like Nike don’t just sell products; they sell a story—a story of athleticism, perseverance, and victory.
That story is what connects with people on an emotional level, turning them from mere customers into lifelong fans.
The Cost of an Uncontrolled Narrative
On the other hand, when you don’t take control of your story, you risk losing your way.
A passive, uncrafted narrative leaves you at the mercy of external forces—market trends, competitors, and even your own doubts and fears.
Without a clear story, your decisions become reactive rather than proactive, your leadership lacks direction, and your business struggles to find its identity.
Consider a company that lacks a clear vision or mission.
Its story is muddled, its messaging is inconsistent, and its employees are disengaged. It might survive for a while, but it will never thrive.
The same is true on a personal level. If you’re not in control of your story, you’re not in control of your life. You’re simply drifting, letting circumstances dictate your path, rather than charting your own course.
Crafting Your Narrative: A Deliberate Act
So, how do you take control of your story? It starts with a deliberate effort to define your narrative.
This means making conscious decisions about who you are, what you stand for, and where you’re going. It’s about identifying your core values, your long-term goals, and the legacy you want to leave behind.
Be specific. A compelling story isn’t vague or general—it’s detailed and precise. Think about the key moments that have shaped your journey. What are the defining experiences that have taught you valuable lessons? What challenges have you overcome, and what successes have you achieved? These specifics are what make your story unique and powerful.
Be conscious. Crafting your story requires self-awareness. It’s about understanding the patterns in your life, recognizing the choices you’ve made, and taking responsibility for your future.
Conscious control means being aware of the story you’re telling yourself every day—the internal dialogue that influences your actions, your decisions, and ultimately, your success.
To this day, I have yet to find a more compelling book that was way ahead of it’s time in Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz. It’s a practical tool kit for re-writing the narrative that shapes you and your world, and your team.
Transforming Challenges into Triumphs
When you take deliberate, specific, and conscious control of your story, you transform challenges into opportunities. Your story becomes a powerful tool for navigating uncertainty, inspiring others, and achieving your goals.
In leadership, your story becomes the foundation of your influence. When you share your story—your vision, your values, and your journey—you create a sense of purpose and direction for your team. You inspire them to believe in the mission, to take ownership of their roles, and to contribute their own stories to the collective success.
In business, your story becomes the essence of your brand. It’s what connects you with your customers, differentiates you from the competition, and drives your growth. A strong, clear story resonates with people on an emotional level, turning them into loyal supporters who are invested in your success.
In life, your story is your legacy. It’s what you leave behind, the impact you have on the world. When you take control of your story, you ensure that it’s a legacy of purpose, passion, and positive change.
Rewriting Your Story: The Ultimate Empowerment
The beauty of your story is that it’s never set in stone.
No matter where you are in your journey, you have the power to rewrite your narrative.
If you’re not happy with the story that’s currently unfolding, you can change it. It’s never too late to take deliberate, specific, and conscious control of your story.
Start by reflecting on your current narrative.
Where are you now?
Are you the hero of your own story, or have you been relegated to a supporting role?
Are you telling a story of growth, learning, and success, or one of missed opportunities and unfulfilled potential?
Once you’ve taken stock, decide what you want your story to be. What’s the next chapter? What themes do you want to explore? What goals do you want to achieve? The act of rewriting your story is an act of empowerment. Every decision you make, every action you take, is a sentence in your narrative. Make them count.
The Ripple Effect of Your Story
When you take control of your story, the impact extends far beyond yourself. Your story becomes a source of inspiration for others—a beacon of hope, resilience, and possibility. It encourages others to take control of their own narratives, to be the heroes of their own stories.
Your story, when deliberately crafted, becomes a pebble dropped into a pond. The ripples spread out, touching everything in their path. By creating a narrative of purpose, passion, and positivity, you create ripples that can change the world.
Conclusion: Your Story is Your Power
In a world full of challenges and uncertainty, your story is your most powerful tool.
Don’t leave it to chance.
Don’t let it be dictated by circumstances.
Take deliberate, specific, and conscious control of your narrative. Craft a story that reflects who you are, what you stand for, and where you’re going. In doing so, you’ll not only navigate the challenges you face—you’ll inspire others to do the same. That’s the true power of a well-crafted story.
Three Experiments for you to Try 🧪
The Quick One (5 mins):
Experiment: Your Daily Story
Action: Take 5 minutes each morning to write a brief narrative for your day as a story. Focus on how you want to feel, act, and what you aim to accomplish. At the end of the day, compare your intentions with the actual outcomes.
The Medium One (30 mins):
Experiment: Life Story Reflection
Action: Spend 30 minutes reflecting on your current life story. Write a new version where you emphasize the aspects you want to cultivate and the goals you wish to achieve. Consider the narrative you’ve been living and identify changes you want to make.
The Longer One (60 mins):
Experiment: Vision Board Creation
Action: Dedicate an hour to creating a story board that visually represents the story you want to live. Use images, words, and symbols that resonate with your desired future. Place it somewhere visible to remind yourself daily of the narrative you’re choosing to live.
